3-D Ready To Embrace The Ultimate Test: Its Genre Roots

"Avatar" has rewritten the record books, "Alice in Wonderland" brought in big bank, and "How to Train Your Dragon" is the latest in a long line of family-friendly 3-D movies to make easy tens of millions of dollars. But as a recent article in USA Today expressed, many believe that the real test of this new filmmaking movement will be rooted as it reconnects with its origins: genre films.

Back in the day, 3-D was the realm of the obscure, exploitative and unabashedly fun. From the soft-porn of "The Stewardesses" to the scares of "House of Wax," the gimmickry of early Three Stooges shorts to bad '80s slasher sequels, genre films loved 3-D when nobody else would. Now, as 3-D Week continues, here's a look at some of the key upcoming films whose success or failure could truly be indicative of whether Hollywood's future is three-dimensional.

"Sucker Punch" (March 25, 2011): When we caught up with Vanessa Hudgens recently, she was excited to the point of breathlessness over the recent decision to convert her Zack Snyder action flick into 3-D. Co-starring Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish, Carla Gugino and Jon Hamm, the flick represents the first fully original vision from the "300" director and has the simple but complex premise of "Alice in Wonderland" with machine guns. Everything we've heard is that it's going to be unlike anything we've seen before — and from Snyder, we'd expect nothing less.

"Drive Angry" (February 11, 2011): As is now mandatory by Hollywood decree, Nicolas Cage stars in this action movie. Along for the ride is Amber Heard, David Morse and Billy "I don't have this 'Twilight' mustache all the time" Burke, starring in a good old-fashioned car movie and a good old-fashioned revenge movie, mixed together for maximum thrill-ride satisfaction. Currently filming in Shreveport, Louisiana, under the tutelage of "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" director Patrick Lussier, it seems like the sort of film that could exploit the third dimension for all its gory, grim, gorgeous best.

"The Hole" (release date TBD): Joe Dante is the filmmaking equivalent of Brooke Shields — everyone loves the guy, and even though he hasn't done anything worthwhile in a few decades, we're always hoping things will turn around. Now, the "Gremlins" director gets his latest opportunity to do right with a suspense thriller about two brothers who discover a bottomless hole in their basement and accidentally unleash evil itself. Already filmed, those who've seen it are reporting good things — let's just hope that Dante's "Hole" career has been leading up to this.

"The Cabin in the Woods" (January 14, 2011): Written by Joss Whedon, the film's Web site tells you about as much as its title does. Recently, the flick was pushed back a year to be converted into 3-D, a move that should put us right there in the cabin to feel whatever creepy things are sure to be going on.

"Jackass 3-D" (October 15, 2010): Arguably the gutsiest 3-D film on the horizon, everybody is dying to see this one because no one has any idea what it will be. "We're going to take the same 3-D technology James Cameron used in 'Avatar' and stick it up Steve-o's butt," Johnny Knoxville has said. "We're taking stupid to a whole new dimension." God help us all.

Do not adjust your glasses! It's 3-D week at MTV News. All week long, we're looking at the biggest and boldest upcoming movies set to reach out and grab you with the wonders of 3-D technology. We've got exclusive sneak peeks at "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," "Tron Legacy," "Clash of the Titans" and many more.

Harry Potter And The Forbidden Journey Is A 'Game Changer,' Creators Say

The past seven months have seen nothing but silence from the Universal Studios crew entrusted to re-create J.K. Rowling's magical otherworld for the soon-to-be-opened Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. But after much planning and fast-moving production, Hogwarts Castle can at last be seen rising high above the construction site's walls.

Last week, reporters were allowed in to get a sneak peek of the theme park and speak with Universal Creative President Mark Woodbury and park art director Alan Gilmore about what fans can expect when entering the world of Hogwarts.

"We've done some pretty amazing things over time, but this is at a level that just exceeds even our wildest expectations," Woodbury said.

Universal has arguably gone the farthest in re-creating what has, up until now, only been a fantasy universe. Gilmore, who worked as art director on several of the "Harry Potter" films, described the process as a kind of building-block system: First, the novels created the world of Harry and magic, then the films showed fans that world, and now Wizarding World will allow people to actively be a part of it.

To ensure the accuracy of the Hogwarts world, which devoted fans have undoubtedly come to know well, Universal worked hand-in-hand with the production department on the film sets to make sure everything matched up between the two. Since the appearance of Hogwarts evolved over the course of the films, the looming structure that stands over Wizarding World is closest to what will appear in the upcoming "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" films.

Woodbury also spoke of the brand-new Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride, a main attraction of the new park. Housed inside the castle, guests will follow a path through many of the major rooms from the books until they make it to the Room of Requirement. There, they will be swept away by an "enchanted bench" to the ride portion of the attraction.

And if the ride portion is a success, that could be a big "game changer," as Woodbury described it. No one involved in the creation of the ride would reveal many of the technical details of Forbidden Journey, but they will say that the ride has somehow combined the use of robotic-arm technology with 3-D visuals (featuring the actual "Harry Potter" cast and filmed specifically for the ride) to bring fans through some of the most beloved moments from the seven novels. Fans can look forward to fighting off a dragon, joining a Quidditch match and flying around Hogwarts, just as was advertised in the Wizarding World Super Bowl spot.

And the fans have nothing on the park's creators when it comes to anticipation and excitement: "This has been, for me, the best job of my life so far. It's been an amazing, amazing job," Gilmore said. "To really, as Mark says, make a game changer &#8212 every detail, every space, people are just going to be so excited when they walk in here. You just can't stop looking at everything. It's all amazing."

'The Last Airbender' Stars Promise Fans Will Be 'Blown Away'

When "The Last Airbender" arrives in theaters in July, fans of the Nickelodeon animated series will finally get to see how well filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has adapted their beloved show. For now, they can at least take the word of co-stars Dev Patel and Jackson Rathbone that the writer/director best known for twist-ending thrillers like "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" was well-suited for the job.

MTV News spoke to the young actors at the Kids' Choice Awards and learned about the director's personal and respectful approach to the highly anticipated film.

"He's so intense as a director," said Patel, who excitedly shared his experience of being covered in live fire for his performance as Prince Zuko, the fire bender. "And his kids are massive fans of the show. So it's really close to him, this project."

Having an intimate reason for taking on a project, however, does not necessarily guarantee a great film. What might be a better indication of quality is how much effort and care Night apparently put into it.

"It's all about the preparation," said Rathbone, who plays Sokka. "That's one thing I really learned, is how hard and how long Night takes to prepare his films and to really get into it. He had every single shot plotted out, and it was really nice to work with someone who tells you what's going to come next in his vision."

As a result of Shyamalan's devotion, Patel said we can expect something more from the material than we've seen previously with the animated series. "I think he's going to bring [depth] to the film," he said. "We're going to get a more human look at the cartoon, which will be fun."

"What you can expect from the film is a lot of amazing action and a lot of really personalized drama," Rathbone added. "It's a very realistic story set in a fantasy film. What Night was able to bring to the cinema with this is an action/family film that people are [going to be] blown away by."

Just how much of himself has the filmmaker brought to the film? After appearing in minor roles in all his prior movies, Shyamalan didn't say whether "Airbender" is consistent with the tradition. "You never know," he told us about a cameo. "You gotta come and see."

Patel is hoping enough fans will go and see the movie so he can find out how his character moves forward in a planned "Airbender" trilogy. "He's sort of an Anakin Skywalker-esque character," he said of Zuko. "So he's got a really nice arc in his constant struggle between good and evil."

Are you excited for "The Last Airbender"? Do you think Shyamalan will do the animated series justice? Let us know in the comments!

Katy Perry to become a SmurfAndrew Koenig Seemed ‘Happy, Fulfilled’ Shooting Final Role, Producer Says

'Clash Of The Titans' A 'Fun, Boisterous Movie,' Sam Worthington Says

London's Leicester Square got an ancient Greek makeover on Monday night for the red-carpet premiere of "Clash of the Titans": Gargantuan columns flanked the rain-soaked square, armor-festooned guards stood at the ready and stone warriors, frozen as if by Medusa, lined the carpet. Through this mystical landscape came star Sam Worthington and the rest of the cast and crew, including Gemma Arterton, Alexa Davalos, Mads Mikkelsen, Nicholas Hoult and director Louis Leterrier.

"We're trying to kick it off with a bang," Worthington said. "This is a fun, boisterous movie. It shouldn't be taken too serious. It's a popcorn film. This is the start of the summer blockbusters."

And it's arriving at a dynamic time in Hollywood. Since "Avatar" shattered box-office records, the two 3-D releases of 2010 — "Alice in Wonderland" and "How to Train Your Dragon" — have both shot straight to the #1 box-office spot. With the tantalizing potential for big bucks, "Clash" filmmakers decided to give their film a last minute 3-D conversion. Worthington's big-budget adventure tale — loosely based on the Greek legend of Perseus — seems like a sure thing to become this weekend's box-office winner.

"It's a fantastic thriller going deep into Greek mythology," Mikkelsen said. "It's basically a roller coaster."

And it's a much more expensive and elaborate roller coaster than the1981 original on which this "Clash" is based. The first film has become something of an adventure classic, but two decades on, its age shows in cheesy special effects and often hammy acting. Leterrier and his team set out to honor the '80s film while bringing a Hollywood-size budget to the proceedings.

"There's a tip of the hat to the original throughout," Davalos said. "It was a labor of love to the original. We all really want to honor it. I hope we did that."

'Harry Potter' Producer Says 'Deathly Hallows' Will Be 'Even More Epic' In 3-D

In the wake of the $2.7 billion success of "Avatar," 3-D announcements have been flying out of Hollywood like arrows from a blue alien's bow. Unlike James Cameron's epic, though, the majority of these films are not shot using 3-D cameras but rather are (or will be) converted during post-production. A conversation among filmmakers and movie buffs has now cropped up: Is there a right and wrong way to make a 3-D film?

That's just one of the questions MTV News will be exploring over the next few days as part of our 3-D week. And it's a question of a great deal of importance to Warner Bros. and the minds behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." In early February, the studio announced that the two parts of the series finale — the first to be released November 19 and the second coming July 15, 2011 — will receive a 3-D conversion.

We spoke with "Potter" executive producer David Heyman to get his take on the conversion process, the reasons behind the move and if we'll ever see the past films in the series re-released as 3-D flicks.

MTV: When did you make the decision to do the two parts of "Deathly Hallows" in 3-D?

David Heyman: I think that it emerged organically. Clearly, the success of 3-D movies has had an impact on the economy and making of films. We saw an opportunity and grabbed it. Also, "Harry Potter" itself has so many exciting possibilities for 3-D, both in things coming at you and also just in making that world seem even more epic than it already is. "Harry Potter" is already an epic film, but having that added dimension will make it even more epic, and that seemed like an opportunity that was too hard to pass up. Though we didn't shoot it in 3-D, the quality of post-3-D has improved remarkably in the last year or two, so we felt very comfortable with that process.

MTV: Was it something that you guys have been talking about for a while or was it a conversation that came up after the success of "Avatar"?

Heyman: Absolutely the success of "Up" and "Avatar" made the economics make sense, and also the quality of some of the work Warners was doing with post-3-D made it feel like something that would augment the film rather than diminish it.

MTV: Warner, of course, also converted "Clash of the Titans." Did you guys talk to the "Clash" folks to see what the conversion would be like and if you'd be happy with the results?

Heyman: Frankly, we are still in the process of discussing methodology, but clearly one of the advantages we have is that we have quite a long time before the release of the film. So we have quite a lot of time to work and hone and hopefully perfect each and every sequence. We are not on a compressed schedule. This is something that was built in very early on, and we think we will achieve the very best quality we can.

MTV: Do you know how long the conversion process will actually take once you start doing it?

Heyman: What they generally talk about is 12 to 16 weeks, but we're going to begin the process very, very soon.

MTV: Do you ever look back and wish you had shot "Deathly Hallows" with 3-D cameras to begin with?

Heyman: I think that there's no question that shooting a film in 3-D is a great thing. I think it was just impractical. It would have taken much, much too long. Shooting in 3-D is slower. Some people say shooting in 3-D is the only way to go, and some people are more open to the other. It'll be interesting as it develops to see whether shooting in 3-D becomes the norm or not, because clearly it's more expensive, partly because shooting takes longer.

MTV: Is there one scene in particular that you think is going to be especially great in 3-D?

Heyman: One of the things I really loved about watching James Cameron's approach to 3-D in "Avatar" was that it wasn't about things coming out at you all the time. It was actually about adding great depth. You wouldn't want to overuse stuff coming at you. We haven't begun the process of converting it yet. We are doing some tests and looking at various things, but we aren't done with any sequence yet. I am obviously looking forward to some of the battle sequences in the second part. I am also looking forward to seeing the dragon flying up. I think there's a lot that will be great in 3-D, but to me, where it's really most exciting is just making that world seem much deeper, richer and what that extra dimension gives you.

MTV: Everyone's very excited about the epilogue. Presumably you're going to use "Benjamin Button"-style effects for Daniel Radcliffe and the other actors, rather than use older actors. Would you also use 3-D effects in there?

Heyman: I don't know. We haven't had those discussions yet.

MTV: Now that you're going to do "Deathly Hallows" in 3-D, have you given any thought to re-releasing some of the other "Potter" films in 3-D?

Heyman: Those discussions haven't yet happened, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. You know what? I actually shouldn't say that. Who knows? It would be great. You can never tell. I hope so.

MTV: Do you think 3-D is here to stay or is it something that we'll look back and say was a fad five years from now?

Heyman: It's funny. You say that, and I've been asking that question myself to people here. I'm in Los Angeles this week, and I think people think it is here to stay. Certainly as it becomes part of home entertainment, then I think that it becomes more and more feasible. Because without that, I think you're getting a compromised experience at home and it further diminishes the value of DVD. But once they get that in the homes, which it looks like they're doing, then I think if something that is well worth it is probably more viable and will be here for longer.

Do not adjust your glasses! It's 3-D week at MTV News. All week long, we're looking at the biggest and boldest upcoming movies set to reach out and grab you with the wonders of 3-D technology. Ashley Greene Explains Why She Doesn't Skate In 'Skateland'

Even if "Skateland," the Anthony Burns-directed drama starring "Twilight" actress Ashley Greene, isn't entirely about skating, it's a sure bet that you will see certain actors skating over the course of the movie. Just don't expect to see Greene, who plays leading lady Michelle Burkham, strap any wheels on her feet.

"I don't [skate] actually, which is probably a good thing," she confessed to MTV News at South by Southwest. "I used to rollerblade, but the four-wheel roller-skate thing is a whole different experience."

Greene says she wasn't unwilling to skate in the film, but her early experiences as a clumsy child made her nervous to get into the rink.

"I'm pretty coordinated, but I'm a little terrified of falling and breaking things," she said. "I was a pretty clumsy child, so I'm always very aware that I'm a little bit accident-prone. But I wouldn't have minded jumping on some skates."

Although skating was off the table, Greene was able to fully embrace another important aspect of "Skateland" — the 1980s setting. Born in 1987, Greene admitted to having a limited connection to the decade, but filming "Skateland" opened her eyes to the time period.

"It was actually really fun," she said. "I didn't really get to experience the '80s except as a 1-year-old, so it was really cool to be able to go back and learn a lot about it. And the music — Michelle, my character, is really into bands like the Smiths and the Cure and stuff like that, so I actually did get to learn a lot while doing this."

Chris Hemsworth Describes His 'Impressive' Costume For 'Thor'

Filming for "Thor" is still underway, but star Chris Hemsworth offered up some hints about the look he'll be sporting when he brings Marvel's god of thunder to the big screen in May 2011.

"It's a pretty impressive costume, and I think anyone who put it on would look pretty cool," Hemsworth told MTV News on last night's red carpet for "The Last Song." Hemsworth's brother, Liam, plays a featured role in the film.

"I have nice, long, blond wig which they throw on every day," he said.

According to the actor, "semi-blond eyebrows and beard" are some of the natural elements of the visual effect sought after by director Kenneth Branagh for the character's debut. Previously, Hemsworth's "Red Dawn" castmate Josh Hutcherson said the actor is becoming "a beast" for the role, bulking up to wield the hero's mighty hammer, Mjolnir.

However, before he could hold the iconic hammer, Hemsworth said he first had to learn how to pronounce its name.

"There's many different versions of pronouncing that thing," he laughed. "The rehearsal process was mainly about how do we pronounce that word."

"Thor" tells the story of a powerful Norse god cast down to Earth from Asgard after he reignites an ancient war. He learns how to be a true hero when the world is threatened by dark forces from his home.

While Hemsworth indicated that "Thor" is almost through filming at the moment, it won't be long until he suits up as the character again for 2012's superhero team-up film "The Avengers." Unlike this time, though, he'll be sharing the screen with fellow Marvel superhero actors Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), and recently cast "Captain America" star Chris Evans.

Stephen Daldry Among Potential 'Breaking Dawn' Directors

The race for the director's position on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" continues, as yet another unexpected name has been connected to Summit Entertainment's vampire franchise: Stephen Daldry.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Daldry is the latest filmmaker to join the mix of possible directors for "Breaking Dawn," the fourth and final installment (or installments, if the book is split into two movies) in the film series based on Stephenie Meyer's popular supernatural romance novels. Daldry's prior film credits include "The Hours," "Billy Elliot" and "The Reader," for which actress Kate Winslet won an Academy Award. Although Daldry has not won an Oscar himself, he has been nominated for all three of the aforementioned movies.

Daldry joins a list of possible directors that includes Sofia Coppola ("Lost in Translation"), Bill Condon ("Dream Girls") and Gus Van Sant ("Good Will Hunting"). Van Sant is considered a favorite among several "Twilight" castmembers, including Robert Pattinson and Peter Facinelli.

"He shoots everything in Portland. He's good at making it look beautiful," Pattinson previously told MTV News of Van Sant's qualifications. "It's all about teenage love and obsessions. I think Gus Van Sant would be great."

Earlier in the month, Kristen Stewart praised Summit's decision to explore filmmakers that aren't necessarily the likeliest of candidates when it comes to the "Twilight" franchise. "I think it's awesome," she said. "I think it's so cool that they're reaching. I think any one of those people would be great."

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" is expected to begin filming in the fall.

'Hot Tub Time Machine': Five Things You Need To Know

Like "Ninja Assassin" and "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus" before it, "Hot Tub Time Machine" is a movie whose title tells you everything you need to know about its story. What the title also manages to communicate is the film's glorious absurdity. It's a flick that does not take itself seriously in the slightest.

John Cusack stars as one of four friends whose night of ski-resort partying lands them in 1986 after a drunken soak in — you guessed it — a hot tub that doubles as a time machine. When Cusack and his pals — including Rob Corddry, Clark Duke and Craig Robinson — find themselves essentially stuck in an '80s movie, they're at first too freaked out by space-time-continuum-altering missteps. But eventually the beers flow and the plotting to alter their lives begins.

Before turning up the temperature and going for a soak this weekend, here are five things you need to know about "Hot Tub Time Machine."

The Title Is the Sell
Scripts pile up for Cusack, but all he needed to know to sign on to "Hot Tub" was the title. His first thought upon seeing the script? " 'That's the dumbest title I've ever heard.' ... So I thought, 'That's a movie that knows what it is,' " he told MTV News.

It was the same for the rest of the cast. Robinson immediately said, " 'I'm in.' Right away. I may not have read the script."

"Cash the check. Let's do this," Duke declared.

The Movie Was a Dare
Back in college, future "Hot Tub" screenwriter Josh Heald had a running joke with the future writers of "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" that one day they'd make a movie called "Hot Tub Time Machine." They all laughed about how it would never happen.

"They've had the title for the last 20 years," Corddry laughed. "And then one day, he wrote it."

The movie hits theaters Friday (March 26). What if the cast had to create their own movie based just on a title?

Robinson would go with "Captain Happy Pants."

Duke would pitch "Avatard."

Corddry opted for "Schindler's List," which, as Duke explained, is about a doorman at a nightclub named Schindler.

The Hot Tub Is a Horrible Place to Hang Out for Two Straight Days
Take it from some Hollywood vets: The hot tub is a dope place to chill out after a long day of skiing but a nightmarish place to shoot a movie. The two days spent sitting, drinking, chatting and time-traveling in the tub seem to have scarred these gentlemen.

"It was like being in a giant toilet," Duke said.

"A giant hot toilet," Robinson added.

"Did you pee in the hot tub?" Corddry wanted to know.

"Pretty much," Robinson said. "I mean, you have to."

At this point, Duke walked out of the interview.

The Best '80s Cusack Movie Is Up for Debate
The film's '80s setting had the entire cast looking back to the pop culture of that decade, specifically the cinematic work of Mr. John Cusack. "Sixteen Candles," "Stand by Me," "Say Anything": How do you choose his best '80s film? Turns out, you can choose, but you won't get much agreement.

Robinson is a "Better Off Dead" man, while Duke is adamant that "Say Anything" is Cusack's finest. Corddry argues that "One Crazy Summer" is where it's at. Co-star Collette Wolfe, however, has a soft spot for some new-millennium Cusack goodness.

"I actually watched 'America's Sweethearts' when we were filming," she said. "Oh my God, he is so good in that movie!"

The '80s Were Both Hilarious and Horrible
Setting aside the glorious work of Cusack in the '80s, the cast decided that the decade in question offered some uproarious moments and some harrowing ones. Topping Corddry's list of '80s awesomeness?

"Probably when Reagan got shot," he laughed. "That was hilarious. It was so weird."

Robinson had his mind on fashion. "Legwarmers were always pretty amazing," he said. "I didn't have any. I did have Michael Jackson's Thriller glove."

But the cast could agree that the '80s offered dreadful times as well. "Challenger exploded," Corddry recalled. "John Lennon was shot. Iran Contra. It was a pretty horrible decade unless you were a cokehead businessman. Then I think it was a pretty good time."

Are you excited to see "Hot Tub Time Machine"? Let us know in the comments!

'Harry Potter' Theme Park Details: When Will Wizarding World Open?

After months of enthusiasm and speculation, Universal Orlando has finally announced the grand opening for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: June 18.

For those fans willing to spend the money, there is an opportunity to visit the park a bit earlier. A special Wizarding World park and hotel package has been available for purchase since mid-February. The reservation start date was listed as May 28, and Universal spokespeople said those who already purchased those packages and made travel arrangements will be treated to exactly what they paid for, which means they will be getting into the park a full 22 days before the general public. Universal said those special packages will remain available until they have been sold out.

The other long-awaited reveal Universal unveiled was information about its biggest attraction in the park: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Housed inside Hogwarts Castle, all that had been previously released about the ride was that it was a thrilling, state-of-the-art attraction that uses entirely new technology to bring the magic, characters and stories of Harry Potter to life in ways never before experienced.

Forbidden Journey is not ready to be ridden yet, and the attraction is still heavily under construction. The entire experience will take about an hour, creative director Thierry Coup said, though he felt it's "impossible to tell how long you're on the ride." The line takes guests from the entrance of Hogwarts Castle on the dungeon level up through Professor Sprout's greenhouse (replete with mandrake roots), past the portrait gallery of moving pictures, through Gryffindor common room and finally to Dumbledore's office.

Universal has teased new technology on the ride, and a lot of it has been used to bring the characters from the "Harry Potter" universe to life. They have created a 3-D projection technology (the details of which are being attributed to "magic") that makes it seem as if Dumbledore is really speaking to attendees while they are waiting in line and also that Harry, Ron and Hermione are really in the Defense Against Dark Arts classroom.

Coup traveled to Leavesden Studios in London, where all the "Harry Potter" films have been shot, two years ago and filmed a number of sequences with the actors behind the iconic characters using the new technology. The line becomes blurred on the ride between the reality and the fiction, because it is not Daniel Radcliffe playing the character Harry Potter, but only the face that has become recognized as Harry Potter.

They also filmed the sequences for the moving paintings while they were in Leavesden, and there are a number of different areas of the castle that make use of them. When guests are walking through Gryffindor common room, the paintings are actually used to explain how the ride works — in magical terms, of course.

Beyond the fact that a "robotic arm"and new filmmaking and technology were used to create the special effects for the Forbidden Journey ride, Universal is keeping mum on how exactly the ride will work. But it is consistent with the story line that is introduced at the beginning of the ride: Today is the first day Muggles (non-magic humans, also known as Universal guests) are being allowed into Hogwarts, and Dumbledore greets the guests in his office to let them know they will listen to a lecture in the Defense Against Dark Arts classroom about the history of Hogwarts.

In the classroom, Harry, Ron and Hermione appear from beneath an invisibility cloak to convince the audience they should skip the lecture and come see the Quidditch match that is going on. The guests then meet Hermione in the Room of Requirement, where she puts a spell on the bench (this is where attendees get on the actual ride portion) that will fly them to the Quidditch field.

A lot more than just the Quidditch match will be included in the ride portion. It will simulate flying around Hogwarts, encountering dragons, being thrown into the Whomping Willow, bumping into Dementors and, in the words of Coup, the "most iconic, most thrilling things Harry has experienced."

"It really feels like you've entered the pages of the books that you've only dreamed about," he said.

A retail store will be at the end of the ride and, since it wasn't anywhere else in Hogsmeade Village and Universal announced that it would be in the park, it seems fair to speculate that the gift shop will be Filch's Emporium of Confiscated Goods. Coup and Alan Gilmore, art director for the films and park, were especially excited about the merchandise that the store would have to offer.

Famed film composer John Williams has worked with Universal to create a reworked version of the "Harry Potter" score for Wizarding World to add more authenticity to the park. No new music has been added, but the various themes could be heard playing in Hogwarts castle as well as around Hogsmeade.

Some final exciting news from Gilmore was that Universal had requested some props to use for the park from Leavesden Studios. With filming for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" winding down and Warner Bros. planning to purchase and potentially rebuild the studio, Gilmore said they were trying to get some of the items to use for Wizarding World.

Are you excited for the Wizarding World to open? What goodies from the "Harry Potter" world do you want to see in the park? Let us know in the comments!

Lee Daniels Wants To Tell The Story Of 'Selma' So We Don't 'Forget'

This week marks the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil-rights protest march from Selma, Alabama, to the State Capitol Building in Montgomery. It was a critical moment in the 1960s civil-rights movement, one that "Precious" director Lee Daniels has chosen to focus on in his next film, "Selma."

MTV News spoke with Daniels on Tuesday about the project and why he's chosen to tell this particular story for film audiences four and a half decades later.

"I think that we forget. So many people have forgotten. So many African-Americans have forgotten. So many white Americans have forgotten," he said.

Recalling how many people laid their lives on the line in the name of equality for all, Daniels hopes he can lead audiences to understand where such a commitment might grow from.

45th Anniversary of the March from Selma to Montgomery

Lee Daniels Wants To Tell The Story Of Selma So We Dont Forget

"I wonder whether or not I could just blindly give my life for a cause," he said. "And do Americans have those balls these days? These guys, they blindly went after a cause that just leaves me ... with my mouth open. We cannot forget it. I think that it's so easy to forget, and that's why it's important to canonize these people."

The march will be in "Selma," along with the factors that led to that march — the three marches, really. The first attempt resulted in a catastrophic confrontation between protesters and law enforcement, a grim showdown that later came to be known as Bloody Sunday. This outburst of violence was critical in leading President Lyndon B. Johnson to intercede in Alabama, to speak with Governor George Wallace about the harassment and, ultimately, to introduce to Congress and later sign into law the National Voting Rights Act of 1965. The second attempt was stalled by a court injunction; it wasn't until late March that King and the protesters who supported him were able to follow through on the five-day, four-night journey from Selma to Montgomery. Daniels wants to tell that story, but he wants it to come to life through the individuals as opposed to a more expansive look.

"The story isn't just about the march, but the people. And what led up to the march. And the history of the relationship between the African-American and the white American," he explained. "There was a love/hate relationship between the white man in the South and the black man. Ninety percent of these white men that were lynching and killing these black guys were breastfed by black women."

Daniels is most interested in presenting the stark reality of the situation, the unobstructed truth in all of its many shades of gray. "We explore that relationship very similarly to the way that last scene was explored in 'Precious,' " he said. "You know, where we find ourselves not sympathetic but empathetic to Mo'Nique's character. We understand her. And so we don't justify racism at all [in 'Selma'], but we understand it."

The story will open during the troubled years immediately following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ruled that racial segregation and unequal voter-registration practices were against the law, but the law wasn't initially strong enough for these to be enforced. As was the case in Selma, local government continued to fabricate barriers for black citizens to register as voters.

"We open our story with just that. You know, people that are trying to [register had to take] these literacy tests." The tests were designed to be impossible, Daniels explained, with questions like "How many bubbles are in a bar of soap?"

And so "Selma" will focus on several of the individuals who were closely involved with the racial disputes in the city. Simultaneously, the story will also give a perspective on the big picture from an unlikely location: the White House.

"The core of the story is ... people that were just trying to vote. And also Johnson's arc as an individual too," Daniels explained. "Lyndon Johnson, the man was a racist. And he started out as a hard-core racist from the South. And he had to look the situation in the eye. The television made America look at the sh-- that was going on down there. And he was forced to ... do the right thing."

For Daniels, it all comes back to presenting as close an approximation to the truth as is possible without actually having been there, and he's ready for people to disagree with him. After all, an ongoing dialogue is the clearest sign of all that people haven't forgotten.

Sandra Bullock Backs Out Of German 'Blind Side' Premiere

A Berlin premiere of "The Blind Side" has reportedly been canceled due to Academy Award-winning actress Sandra Bullock's withdrawal from the event.

According to Us Weekly, a Warner Bros. representative confirmed that Bullock's cancellation led to the event being called off. This is the second international red-carpet appearance Bullock, 45, has canceled in less than a week, having declined to participate in a London premiere scheduled for Wednesday. That screening is expected to proceed without Bullock's involvement.

The Oscar winner's decision to remove herself from these press events for "The Blind Side" comes amid allegations that husband Jesse James has been involved in an 11-month affair with model Michelle "Bombshell" McGee. James, 40, spoke out about the controversy in a statement issued last week.

"The vast majority of the allegations reported are untrue and unfounded. Beyond that, I will not dignify these private matters with any further public comment," James said. "There is only one person to blame for this whole situation, and that is me. It's because of my poor judgment that I deserve everything bad that is coming my way. This has caused my wife and kids pain and embarrassment beyond comprehension, and I am extremely saddened to have brought this on them. I am truly very sorry for the grief I have caused them. I hope one day they can find it in their hearts to forgive me."

Bullock has yet to make a public appearance since the allegations surfaced earlier this month.

Lee Daniels Confirms Liam Neeson, Cedric The Entertainer For 'Selma'

"Precious" director Lee Daniels revealed in an exclusive interview with MTV News that casting is firming up for his next film, "Selma." Liam Neeson and Cedric the Entertainer are both on board in key roles, with the former playing President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the latter playing American civil rights movement leader and Martin Luther King Jr. associate Ralph Abernathy.

"Selma" is set against the backdrop of the civil rights disputes that raged during the 1960s. It is specifically focused on one moment in time in the middle of the decade. Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ostensibly made segregation illegal, local governments in less forward-thinking parts of the country still built barriers designed to defeat black citizens who wished to exercise their constitutional rights.

This week marks the 45th anniversary of one historic act of protest during that time — on March 25, 1965, Martin Luther King Jr. led a mass gathering of civil rights protesters to the doorstep of Alabama's State Capitol Building in Montgomery. It was the end of a five-day, four-night march that started in Selma, Alabama, an act of public protest that ultimately became an important component in the passage of the National Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed discriminatory practices that had been used to prevent African-Americans from exercising their right to vote.

Daniels' story in "Selma" will encompass the march and the events leading up to it. His key players are Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo was cast in the role last week), President Johnson, Sheriff Jim Clark (Hugh Jackman), future Sheriff Wilson Baker (elected in '66), Andrew Young (Lenny Kravitz) and Ralph Abernathy.

"Liam Neeson's playing Johnson," Daniels told us. "Wallace is not [cast], but [an offer is] out. We're waiting for a deal to close."

One bit of casting that Daniels is particularly pleased with is the Abernathy role. "We have Cedric the Entertainer, who is going to be [Ralph] Abernathy. He is a really good choice, so we're excited about that."

Stay tuned to MTV News for more from Daniels on "Selma," why the story is important to him, what he remembers of it and how the coming film will treat its subjects.

Jonah Hill Has Been 'Talking A Lot' With Ben Stiller About 'Zoolander 2'

Between "Get Him to the Greek" and "21 Jump Street," Jonah Hill has several anticipated projects on the horizon. But there is one potential film role the comedian's fans are particularly excited about: a villainous turn in "Zoolander 2."

While promoting the forthcoming "How to Train Your Dragon," Hill revealed to MTV News that there's some truth to reports connecting him to an antagonist role in the developing "Zoolander 2," though he's not officially onboard just yet. According to Hill, there's nothing to sign on to at the moment.

"There is no 'officially onboard.' There is no ship," the actor laughed when asked if he was committed to a "Zoolander" sequel. "They're writing it right now. We've been talking a lot about it, and it seems really exciting and fun."

While his involvement isn't official quite yet, Hill said he's interested in the project due to his admiration for "Zoolander 2" collaborators Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux, not to mention his own appreciation of the original 2001 comedy. "If Ben and Justin want me to do it, we've been talking about it," he reiterated. "I saw Ben a couple of days ago, and we've been talking a lot about it, and it's really exciting. I love 'Zoolander,' and I think it's going to be really fun. Hopefully, they can get it together and we'll get going."

If cast, Hill's new character would be featured alongside original male models Derek Zoolander (Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson), both of whom have been forgotten by the fashion industry.

"In the fashion world, if you go away for a year, it's changed. It just happens so quickly," Stiller told MTV News last month of the "Zoolander" sequel's plot. "I think the idea in the beginning of the movie is that it's 10 years later, and Derek and Hansel are literally forgotten. Nobody remembers who they are, so they have to reinvent themselves."

Chris Evans Is Captain America

America has its very own superhero, as Chris Evans is officially the star of "The First Avenger: Captain America."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Evans has accepted an offer from Marvel Studios to star as Steve Rogers in "Captain America" and nine other Marvel features, including potential sequels, "The Avengers" and other unannounced projects. Evans' casting rounds out Marvel's so-called holy trinity of heroes, with Robert Downey Jr. long filling the metallic armor of Tony Stark in Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" films and Chris Hemsworth currently shooting the title role in Kenneth Branagh's "Thor."

Last week, news broke that Marvel had offered Evans the role of Steve Rogers, a scrawny hero that takes a super-soldier serum and consequently becomes the iconic Captain America. Evans considered the deal over the weekend but quickly moved into the negotiations phase, a process THR described as moving so swiftly that "it's now all about dotting the i's and crossing the t's."

Evans had a few obstacles to overcome before deciding whether to wield the star-spangled shield. For one, the actor is scheduled to appear opposite Anna Faris in "What's Your Number?," a romantic comedy slated to shoot around the same time as "Captain America." Additionally, Evans has already played a Marvel superhero before: the Human Torch in Fox's "Fantastic Four" franchise.

By securing "Captain America," Evans has officially put his name to four comic book properties. In addition to "Fantastic Four," the actor has filmed roles in the forthcoming adaptations of "The Losers" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

'New Moon' Star Nikki Reed On Who Should Direct 'Breaking Dawn'

SANTA CLARITA, California — Though news has been slow on the "Breaking Dawn" front over the past few months, last week's announcement of a short list of potential directors caused a lot of excitement in the "Twilight" community, especially after Kristen Stewart confirmed the rumors were in fact true.

Stewart and fellow "New Moon" star Dakota Fanning shared their excitement at the prospect of Gus Van Sant, Sofia Coppola or Bill Condon directing the final installment(s) of "The Twilight Saga" for the big screen, while Robert Pattinson had already given his endorsement for Van Sant late last year.

Their co-star Nikki Reed, however, was left out of that information loop and apparently was in some form of media blackout, because when MTV News spoke with her last night at the "New Moon" DVD/Blu-ray release party in Santa Clarita, it was the first time she heard about the list.

"I was trying to ask them earlier today, and they wouldn't give me anything," she said. "But all the directors that you mentioned, I mean, that would be fantastic, both [Van Sant and Coppola]. Either one. I mean, we would be honored."

"New Moon" director Chris Weitz echoed her sentiments, saying the Coppola choice was an "interesting idea" and that Van Sant directing the film(s) "would be bitchin'."

There wasn't much more to speak of on the "Breaking Dawn" front, though, because as Reed confirmed, there's no new news out there.

"I would love to talk about 'Breaking Dawn' because I would love to know what's going on," she said. "All I know is that hopefully something is going to happen, and I can't wait to hear about it, because I am just as anxious as you and everybody else. We just don't know anything yet."

Both she and Weitz did agree on the debate over whether "Breaking Dawn" should be one movie or two. "I don't see how you could possibly make 'Breaking Dawn' into one film," Reed said, and Weitz agreed: "I think [two films] is the right thing to do."

'Alice In Wonderland' Shrinks Box-Office Competition For Third Week

The Box-Office Top Five:

#1 "Alice in Wonderland" ($34.5 million)
#2 "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" ($21.8 million)
#3 "The Bounty Hunter" ($21 million)
#4 "Repo Men" ($6.2 million)
#5 "She's Out of My League" ($6 million)

Though the subject matter is more than a little bit wacky, there's nothing unusual about the continued success story of "Alice in Wonderland," director Tim Burton's 3-D exploration of the bizarre world established by author Lewis Carroll. "Wonderland" topped the box-office charts for its third weekend in a row, easily beheading the surrounding competition with a $34.5 million intake. After three weeks in theaters, the fantasy film has earned a walloping $565.8 million across the globe.

Of the other box-office battlers, only newcomers "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "The Bounty Hunter" came close to challenging "Wonderland" for cinematic supremacy, but both films were too busy contending with each other to make a dent on Burton's fantasy feature. Throughout the weekend, Fox's family comedy and Sony's romantic comedy alternated back and forth between second and third place, but "Wimpy Kid" ultimately won out over Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler's "Bounty Hunter." By Sunday's conclusion, "Wimpy Kid" earned back its entire production budget plus a profit of nearly $8 million, while "Bounty Hunter" cracked just over half of its $40 million budget.

"Repo Men," the science-fiction thriller starring Jude Law, Forest Whitaker and Liev Schreiber, limped through the finish line in fourth place. The $6.2 million performance is a tough result given the Universal film's $32 million budget, but it's hardly surprising given the movie's gruesome subject matter and mostly negative reviews.

While "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," "The Bounty Hunter" and "Repo Men" had the widest releases of the weekend's newcomers, they weren't the only films debuting at the box office. In just 244 theaters, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning's "The Runaways" earned an impressive $803,000. Ben Stiller's "Greenberg," meanwhile, enjoyed the weekend's highest per-screen average at $40,000 per three theaters, for a total of $120,000. Anchor Bay Films' "City Island" performed admirably as well with $35,000 from only two locations.

Upcoming Releases

Next weekend, moviegoers can travel back to the past with MGM's "Hot Tub Time Machine," or they can sit down for school with "How to Train Your Dragon," DreamWorks' 3-D animated fantasy film. Sean Bean's "Ca$h" and Amanda Seyfried's "Chloe" also open in limited release.

Exclusive: Penelope Cruz To Play Johnny Depp's Love Interest In New 'Pirates'

We've known since February that Penйlope Cruz was looking to come aboard "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth installment of Johnny Depp's swashbuckling adventure stories. Yet until now, her exact role has remained unclear.

MTV News has exclusively learned exactly how Cruz fits into the story: She's the daughter of Depp's nemesis.

"She plays the daughter of Blackbeard," executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer told MTV News at ShoWest in Las Vegas. "She's the daughter of the bad guy.

"She brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she's so feisty," he continued, adding that there will be "a little romance between [Depp's] Captain Jack and the character that Penelope plays."

Ian McShane is to set to play Blackbeard, the main adversary to Captain Jack Sparrow. As Bruckheimer put it, Blackbeard is "the nastiest pirate ever."

Geoffrey Rush, who has played Barbossa in the three previous "Pirates" films, told MTV News in September that he expected to reprise his role in "On Stranger Tides," and Bruckheimer confirmed that will indeed be the case.

Filming is slated to begin in June. New actors are in the process of being cast for certain roles, with testing currently in the works. As for the plot, we know the story will pick up where it ended in 2007's "At World's End": with Sparrow's search for the Fountain of Youth. Yet Bruckheimer promised a fresh approach to this familiar material.

"We're going to take a whole new direction," he said.

Johnny Depp Says Making ‘Alice In Wonderland’ Was ‘A Gas’Cheryl Cole isn’t motivated by money

'New Moon' Star Nikki Reed Amazed By Crowd At DVD Release

SANTA CLARITA, California — While there were midnight parties for the "New Moon" DVD and Blu-ray release taking place across the country Friday night, only those living in the Los Angeles area were treated to the company of both the director and a main star. Director Chris Weitz and actress Nikki Reed traveled to the Wal-Mart in Santa Clarita to celebrate the release.

"I like to go to Wal-Mart to hold press conferences just at odd moments, so this is not my first time," Weitz joked when he spoke with MTV News at the event. "But usually people don't show up with cameras. I'm just talking to an imaginary microphone."

Reed answered a bit more sincerely, saying, "It's amazing. It's fun, you know? ... It always feels very undeserved, I guess, when you show up at a place like this and there's 400 people standing outside."

Even after spending three years on the "Twilight Saga" films, she said never gets used to the incredible reaction of the fans. Reed plays a member of the Cullen brood of vampires, Rosalie Hale, and is the "sister" to Robert Pattinson's Edward Cullen. Despite her high-ranking status in the list of fan-favorite actors from the series, Reed said she still never expects the type of turnout there was just for her Friday night.

"I always want to go out and go, 'You know that I'm not Rob. It's just me here. It's me and Chris,' " she said with a laugh. "[Yet the fans] still come around."

Reed did acknowledge that the fans are the driving force behind the series and are responsible for the "Twilight" films' vast success. "They just love the movies," she said, "and it's great to be a part of it."

'Sex And The City 2' Stars Dish On What Carrie And Co. Have Been Up To

"Sex and the City 2" film is set to open this May, and so far, only a few details have leaked: Miley Cyrus will have cameo, the ladies will somehow end up in Morocco, and John Corbett's Aiden may make an appearance. When MTV News caught up with the ladies, minus Kim Cattrall, at ShoWest in Las Vegas this week, we tried to get a few more hints about the story. But Sarah Jessica Parker kept her descriptions "vague" on purpose. Why? "I'm trying to set very low standards," she joked. But here, at least, is how all fabulous foursome begin their next adventure.

Carrie
Sarah Jessica Parker: This time around, Carrie has been married for a couple of years. She is about to publish her fourth book. She is content. ... She and her husband, John, have found a nice and modest apartment, and they are living their lives, and she is seeing her friends as much as time allows.

Charlotte
Parker: Charlotte is still married to Harry. She is still comfortable with the name Goldenblatt.

Kristin Davis: Yes, I am. I have two children now. [Lily] is two years older than last time. [Charlotte's] been baking.

Miranda
Cynthia Nixon: Miranda's still married as well. Miranda only has one child. [She's] married to Steve, living in Brooklyn, still employing Magda, still working as a lawyer, still having brunch with the ladies.

Samantha
Parker: And Samantha is firmly entrenched in her PR business in New York, with her office right above Times Square. Successful. Happily single.

Nixon: Happy to be back in New York.

Parker: Very happily back in New York, and spending as much time with the ladies as her schedule allows.

Ronnie Wood is selling his houseWill The Runaways’ ’70s Fashions Come Back In Style?

Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning Discuss Runaways' Influence At SXSW

AUSTIN, Texas — If Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning's "The Runaways" accomplishes anything, hopefully it will raise awareness of the hugely influential all-girl group, who burned brightly, then faded away in the late '70s.

"They existed only for a short period of time, but to when you talk to Joan [Jett, who played guitar and eventually fronted the band] about it, it's clear they're still living it," Stewart — who plays Jett in the film — told MTV News on Friday (March 19) at South by Southwest. "Their music influenced so many bands, and they're not always mentioned in the conversation. So that's what drew me to this film."

"I didn't know anything about the Runaways before I started. I knew Joan but not the Runaways, and I think a lot of people my age don't know them," added Fanning, who plays Jett's foil, Cherie Currie. "And especially Cherie. I don't think a lot of people know her story. And that's why I wanted to do it."

While it's true that the Runaways' bratty, sneering brand of rock can still be heard today — in bands like the Donnas and Paramore, to name just a few — what's even more important about the group is what they represented. They were the first all-girl rock group to achieve (relative) mainstream success, and in doing so, they broke not only the so-called glass ceiling, but a whole lot of taboos too.

"A lot of girls in my generation don't realize there was a time when you couldn't actually do something. And what the Runaways did at the time was actually not OK, not acceptable, not accepted," Fanning said. "Because I've grown up thinking I could do and be whatever I want, and I've never thought for a second that I couldn't because I'm a girl. So to do this movie, and see that it was not accepted at all, was really interesting."

"Joan was a punk before 'punk' was a word. She loved it once it started. She went to London and hung out with the Sex Pistols," Stewart said. "And that attitude is important, because it inspired girls. Courtney Love, riot-grrrl bands like Bikini Kill and Girl in a Coma, they were all hugely influenced by her. And, really, so was any girl that wanted to pick up a guitar and play rock music."

So while box-office numbers are important to some, they don't matter one bit to Stewart and Fanning. They're just happy the film is finally out and that the story of the Runaways will finally be told. Because, much like 30 years ago, the Runaways are needed today.

"I don't think there are a whole lot of bands like them right now. As much as they changed rock and roll for girls, I think they're sort of unique in their desire to make music like that and be that aggressive," Stewart said. "So the best thing about this movie is to let people see that. And we got to be friends with Joan and Cherie. And they're thrilled that their story is getting out there."

MTV News is at SXSW all weekend long, so check back for more show reports, interviews and blog posts on what's going down in Austin.

'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo': Swede Sensation, By Kurt Loder

Lisbeth Salander may be the first punked-out, mentally unstable heroine in the mystery-thriller genre. She's a computer wizard with a special talent for hacking, and in the sensational Swedish film "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," she's a kick-ass wonder to watch.

Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace) works for a Stockholm security firm. In the course of researching a client's case, she becomes involved in the complex affairs of Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), a crusading journalist who specializes in ripping the lid off of crooked financial shenanigans. Mikael has just lost a big libel suit, and he's decided it'd be best to resign from Millennium, the investigative magazine of which he is also publisher, and get out of town for a while. He accepts an offer from a reclusive industrialist named Vanger (Sven-Bertil Taube) to write a history of his famous family business. When he arrives at Vanger's mansion on a remote, snowy island, however, he learns that the man despises most of his family's members and is convinced that one of them was responsible for the mysterious disappearance of his beloved niece, Harriet, some 40 years earlier. Mikael's real job is to find out who that was.

Lisbeth, who followed Mikael's legal tribulations in the press, is convinced he was set up (he was). Hacking into the laptop Mikael has taken with him on the Vanger assignment, she learns what he's actually up to, and decides she can help.

The story is fat with characters, most of them various Vangers, some of them back-in-the-day Nazis, one of them possibly a murderer. There are "Silence of the Lambs" overtones as Mikael and Lisbeth attempt to connect Harriet's disappearance to a series of long-unsolved murders elsewhere in the area; and Mikael's discovery of crucial clues in a group of photographs taken the day Harriet vanished — clues that he slowly, methodically links together — is wonderfully suspenseful.

It's a movie in which there's a lot going on, almost all of it interesting. But Lisbeth, with her hostile glare, her dead-black hair, her many piercings and a full-back tattoo that gives the picture its name — is the film's centerpiece. We learn that she did something terrible when she was a child (exactly what it was only slowly becomes clear), and that she spent time in a mental institution. Since her release, she's been under the control of state-appointed guardians, the latest a man named Bjurman (Peter Andersson). Bjurman is a repulsive sleaze who annoyingly monitors Lisbeth's activities, controls her finances and subjects her to vicious sexual assaults. Realizing there'd be no point in turning him in — who would believe a crazy girl's story? — she instead plots a more direct response; and her return to Bjurman's apartment with a taser and a tattoo needle is one of the most electrifying revenge scenes ever put on film. We're appalled, but exhilarated — this guy really deserves it.

The movie is based on a novel with the more pungent Swedish title "Men Who Hate Women" by the late Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson. The book is the first of a best-selling Millennium trilogy that Larsson wrote but didn't live to see published. (He died in 2004.) With its intricate plot and rich characters, this film version seems inevitably headed for an English-language remake. The two succeeding books in the Millennium series have already been filmed, and will soon make their way to this country. The return of Lisbeth Salander — damaged, angry and brilliant — is now eagerly awaited.

Don't miss Kurt Loder's reviews of "The Runaways" and "Repo Men," also new in theaters this week.

Will The Runaways' '70s Fashions Come Back In Style?

When Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart rock the big screen this weekend in their new flick "The Runaways," fans will see them in full '70s style. That means they'll be rocking feathered and shag haircuts, bell-bottom jeans and lots of vintage T-shirts. Some of the fashion community's biggest stars admit that this summer, they suspect a lot of young ladies will try their hand at that classic Runaways style.

"[The girls are] bringing in the feathered rock-and-roll look," "The City" boss Kelly Cutrone told MTV News. "The good news about this film for me, right now, is that '70s fashion is affordable. It was all about the satin shorts. It was all about the little thongy tank tops with a boy shirt and pair of corduroys and a bag and some studs. It's nothing too fancy that you can't get from a vintage store."

Cutrone added that the look, which was more masculine than what ladies had worn in previous decades, sprang from the freedom women found in that decade. "All of a sudden, you can get a job and make your own money. This was a happening time, because they were free," she said. "They were empowered. They were the band; they weren't with the band."

Celebrity stylist Robert Verdi said that while the look might feel new to the actresses' fans, their parents will definitely recall wearing many of these styles. "I think what's interesting when you look at the Runaways' style is that it's new to a generation but old to some people," he said. "The entire sort of shaggy haircut ... it's sort of punk rock, kind of intellectual, but still grungy.

"What stands out is the shaggy hair. The mullet. That look will become popular again with young girls, because anyone who's done it before won't do it again," he added, pointing out a few other trends that will take off. "The cork shoes. The big, chunky kind of hippie shoe. The faded, light-blue jeans. The fitted military shirts with big collars. Nothing's loose. ... All those things will be things girls like to wear."

If any of the looks take off, Heatherette designer Richie Rich said it will be all about the T-shirts. "I love '70s fashion. I love that whole hippie-dippy feeling ... that vibe of being cooler than school," he said. "It can translate into the streets. People wearing rock-and-roll T-shirts, real chopped-up hair. I'm not so certain about the whole bootleg jeans. It's something fun, something different."

Richie described the look as cool tomboy and said the aesthetic can definitely be very 2010. "It will give us that aesthetic, like cool T-shirts and accessories and lots of eyeliner ... versions of the hair, like, fun and punky," he said, adding that "cool leather jackets and T-shirts" will come back in style. "It's street fashion. They almost revolutionized that in so many ways."

'New Moon' To Receive Fan Choice Award At ShoWest

In the eyes of the Academy Awards, "The Hurt Locker" was the Best Picture of 2009. But a loyal army of Twilighters feel differently — and this week, they're making their opinions known at one of Hollywood's most visible annual conventions.

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" has been selected for the ShoWest/Fandango Fan Choice Award, which will be presented Thursday at ShoWest's Final Night Banquet and Award Ceremony at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas. The Fan Choice Award was voted on by nearly 50,000 moviegoers, who were asked on Fandango to select their favorite film of 2009.

ShoWest, the largest annual convention for the motion-picture industry, is currently under way in Las Vegas. This year's installment will once again end with the celebrated Banquet and Award Ceremony, where awards will also be presented to Vanessa Hudgens, Zach Galifianakis, Amanda Seyfried, Sam Worthington and Jerry Bruckheimer. Rumor has it that a producer from the "Twilight" series will accept the award, and a special video message from one of the franchise's top stars will be played for those in attendance.

"You might have guessed that 'Avatar' would have won the Fan Choice Award, since 'Avatar' was the top ticket-seller in our company's history," explained Fandango Chief Marketing Officer Ted Hong. "But never bet against the passion, loyalty and dedication of the vociferous 'Twilight' fans."

The sequel to "Twilight" garnered nearly 66 percent of the vote — although "Hurt Locker" shouldn't feel too bad, as the same studio (Summit Entertainment) showed off its diversity in 2009 by releasing both films.

"Moviegoers on Fandango have been behind the franchise from the very beginning, and that's why the first 'Twilight' movie won the Fan Choice Award last year," Hong added. "The big question will be whether or not 'Eclipse' will be in the running for next year's award, and if the franchise can pull off a three-peat."

"We are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to partner with Fandango to present the ShoWest/Fandango Fan Choice Award at this year's ShoWest Final Night Banquet and Award Ceremony," ShoWest managing director Robert Sunshine said in a statement. "It is no surprise that the fans have chosen the box-office hit 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' as this year's recipient, and we are excited to present the film with this award."

Dakota Fanning Revels In Rebellion In 'The Runaways'

Dakota Fanning is perhaps one of the most well-mannered, hardworking and ambitious teens in Hollywood. But playing rock legend Cherie Currie in her new flick, "The Runaways," opening Friday, gave her the chance to get a little defiant, even if it was for the big screen.

"I definitely can relate in the fact that we're both 15, and we're both doing what we love to do," she told MTV News on the red carpet of the New York premiere of "The Runaways," where Fanning sparkled in a nude-colored dress by Elie Saab.

But age is where their similarities begin and end, Fanning said. "She was in the music industry and I'm acting. But also, it's such a different time, and growing up in 1975 and growing up today is so different," she explained. "Cherie kind of grew up with no restrictions or rules, kind of figuring it out for herself. It's kind of different for me. I will never get to have that experience, so I kind of got to have it through the film."

Currie herself agreed that while Fanning has a much better grasp on fame than she did, she's still a great rebel in the movie. "I just don't think they could have found anyone better [to play me]. She nailed it. I'm her biggest fan," Currie said. "Dakota has her stuff way more together than I ever did. She handles fame beautifully. To her, it's just another day."

Kristen Stewart And Dakota Fanning Reveal Biggest ‘Runaways’ Challenges

Kristen Stewart And Dakota Fanning Reveal Biggest 'Runaways' Challenges

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning have been winning praise for their turns as real-life teen rockers in "The Runaways" since the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. An early viewing had MTV News declaring that KStew, in the role of Joan Jett, "curses and growls as the part demands," while feting Fanning for a "riveting portrayal" of Cherie Currie.

Going into the June '09 shoot, though, both actresses were beset with anxieties that go along with portraying iconic musicians, both of whom would be on set each day. "I think playing a real person that was going to be there," Fanning told MTV News, ticking off a list of her fears. "Also, singing, for me, which was very intimidating. I didn't really know exactly who the Runaways were, so just learning about them and watching the 'Live in Japan' of 'Cherry Bomb' and realizing I had to do that was a little scary. But that's kind of what drew me to it and excited me."

Indeed, as Stewart explained, such fears are part and parcel of working in front of the camera. "I don't remember the last time I wasn't really freaked out before I started a movie," she said. "And the second you sort of get into the groove, you find it. It becomes what you thought it would be when you read it. You have to have that second [of fear], or else you're probably not doing something very worthwhile."

And the only way to overcome these worries is to get on with the show. "After you get the first day under your belt, you feel pretty good about it," said Fanning.

They may have felt good about it after that first day, but the rest of the shoot didn't get any easier. "Every day was a huge scene," said Stewart. "There was never one day that was just like, 'Oh yeah, no big deal today.' Every day was loaded."

'Twilight' Star Ashley Greene Discusses Onscreen Nudity

In her relatively short film career, Ashley Greene has played a vampire, a hostage victim and an '80s-era teen. Whatever role she steps into in the future, Greene is sure of one thing: She won't be taking it all off on the big screen.

"I will never say never," the 23-year-old actress told MTV News at South by Southwest while promoting her upcoming indie "Skateland." "I will say, at this moment, nudity in a film is something that does turn me off because of the context that it's put in in most of the films. It exploits women, and it's not artistic at all."

That's not to say the "Twilight" star is afraid of showing off a little skin. In January, she shot a series of SoBe Lifewater ads wearing only a painted-on bikini as she posed in the water and on the beach.

While Greene currently has no interest in appearing on camera in the buff, she admits that if the right part came along, she'd have to consider going nude. "I won't say that, down the years, if I find a character and it's absolutely necessary and it tells a story, I wouldn't nix it because of that," she said.

So what does Greene look for in a role? How is she trying to shape her career now that the "Twilight" franchise has made her a well-known Hollywood player? "It's a very different world for me to be thrown into, being able to pick roles and say, 'Is that good for me?' " she explained. "What we're trying to do is build longevity and to showcase what I can do. It's a little frightening, but it's a lot of fun to be able to pick and choose. My biggest criteria is to be able to read a script and really care about the characters and be affected by them and want to know what they're doing and what happens to them next."

Kristen Stewart Talks About Her 'Eclipse' Wig

Taylor Lautner wearing a wig in the "Twilight Saga" isn't anything new to fans of the franchise, but due to a Joan Jett haircut for her latest film "The Runaways,"Kristen Stewart also had to don a wig for "Eclipse."

"It was fine. I've worn wigs before, just not with such ... I just felt such a tactile thing with Joan [that I cut my hair for the role]," she told MTV News on the red carpet of "The Runaways" premiere. "She holds all of her energy in her hands. I can be Bella without my hair, but I couldn't play Joan without."

And while some teenage girls would not have been too eager to chop off their locks, Stewart said she didn't have an emotional attachment to her strands. "I think Dakota was more emotional than I was, to be honest," she said. "She, like, almost cried when I cut my hair. It was something I needed to do. I needed to feel the sweat coming down my face and, like, I needed to be able to touch it. I just needed to do it."

The bond between Stewart and Fanning went far beyond that of just hair — the girls admitted that they became really good friends while shooting the flick. "It would have been really awful had we not [gotten along]," she said. "It is really rare, I have to say. I've worked with so many young people. I've met so many young people, actors, and everyone's different. Everybody's doing things for different reasons. I strongly admire [her]. It's cool."

Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning ‘Really Excited’ About ‘Eclipse’ TrailerCheryl Cole to give Ashley another chance?

Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning 'Really Excited' About 'Eclipse' Trailer

HOLLYWOOD — On Thursday night at the Cinerama Dome, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning arrived to greet shrieking fans and unveil their new rock and roll biopic "The Runaways." As it turns out, that was their second major release of the day.

Earlier in the afternoon, the first official trailer for "Eclipse" was leaked, whipping Twilighters into a frenzy as they analyzed the footage frame-by-frame, looking for clues about the eagerly anticipated June 30 installment of the franchise. And although Kristen was there to talk about Joan rather than Bella, and Dakota was in Cherie mode rather than channeling Jane, both found it hard to suppress their excitement.

"Yeah, I saw it," KStew said of the dazzling 90-second first look at the third "Twilight" movie. "It's really fast and it's really quick."

While millions of people were glimpsing the footage over and over again (in L.A., the tease for the 11 o'clock news even featured it), Fanning sheepishly admitted that she was just happy she had made the clip.

"Yeah, I am surprised I am in it," the 15-year-old Volturi admitted, citing her brief shot strolling across a field and saying of Bella, "She's still human; the Volturi don't give second chances."

"I can't give it away, but I am in two scenes this time," Fanning admitted of her limited role in the movie. "I wasn't expecting [to see myself in the trailer]. But it's really great."

Before they went into the theater to premiere "The Runaways," Kristen told us that when she first saw the "Eclipse" trailer she found herself watching it like a fan.

"I was like, 'Oh, OK,' " Stewart remembered of trying to take in all the quick cuts. "It was like watching stills. It's hard for me to watch stuff, and initially my reaction is always a little strange.

"But I'm really excited," summed up KStew, undoubtedly voicing the opinion of Twilighters everywhere. "I want to see more!"

Kristen Stewart Talks 'Runaways' On 'Tonight Show'

Kristen Stewart got her girl power on while filming her new flick "The Runaways," which opens on March 19. While shooting the film about the groundbreaking 1970s group, she got to hang with "Twilight" co-star Dakota Fanning and ex-Runaway Joan Jett. When Stewart stopped by "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Wednesday night, she admitted that Jett — who Stewart portrays in the film — taught her a lot about being an uber-cool rock chick.

"I was really lucky to have her be into the project and be open to it," she said of Jett's involvement.

When Stewart first arrived on set, she was worried that Jett would be skeptical of her casting. "I was so intimidated. I was about to do 'New Moon.' I sort of thought she was going to look at me and [want to replace me because I had long hair]. We spent three weeks together, [and] every day she told me things I could never say."

Eventually the pair bonded, but Stewart remained determined to nail her portrayal of Jett (which Jett has said she did). "Playing a real person, you always feel the pressure," she explained. "It's, like, if I don't get every little thing right I'm going to kill myself. And we have very different tics. We're both, like, ridden with tics, but they're a completely different set of them.

"She stretches all the time," Stewart continued. "She's got a hunch, but a cool one. She was on set everyday. I would have felt like such a fraud. There's only so much a script and footage and photos can show you."

Later in the interview Stewart mentioned Fanning, who plays Cherie Currie in the biopic. She said the two are now as thick as thieves, even if they are very different people. "Dakota is one of my best friends and she's a great girl," Stewart said. "She speaks very well and she presents herself in a certain way, and I have an incapability of acting if I'm not acting. I wear my heart on my sleeve."

Corey Haim: A Timeline Of The Late Actor's Career

The news that actor Corey Haim, 38, was found dead on Wednesday morning (March 10) of an apparent drug overdose has left the late Hollywood icon's family, friends and fans in mourning. Although Haim's career had been relatively quiet in recent years, the actor was a steady presence on the big screen throughout the 1980s, starring alongside talents such as Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen and longtime friend and collaborator Corey Feldman.

In memory of the late actor, MTV News has compiled a timeline of Corey Haim's career in Hollywood from his first roles in "Firstborn" and "Silver Bullet" to his final years as a reality television star alongside Feldman.

1984: Haim's first cinematic role came in the form of "Firstborn," in which he played Brian Livingston, a boy whose family is terrorized by his mother's abusive boyfriend. He starred opposite actors Robert Downey Jr., Sarah Jessica Parker and Peter Weller ("RoboCop").

1985: The actor's success in "Firstborn" brought numerous roles the following year, including smaller parts in "Secret Admirer" and "Murphy's Romance." Haim's most prominent role of the year, however, was "Silver Bullet," an adaptation of Stephen King's werewolf-centric novella.

1986: Haim's lone credit for the year was the title role in "Lucas," director David Seltzer's film about a socially ostracized youth who falls in love with the alluring new girl in school. He starred opposite Charlie Sheen, Winona Ryder, Jeremy Piven and Courtney Thorne-Smith.

1987: In what remains one of Haim's most frequently cited roles, "The Lost Boys" debuted to a surprising amount of commercial success and instantly earned its place as a cult classic amongst horror enthusiasts. Haim starred alongside fellow '80s icons Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, Alex Winter and Jason Patric.

1988–1989: Following the success of "The Lost Boys," Haim landed leading roles in the more teen-oriented "License to Drive" (1988) and "Dream a Little Dream" (1989), as well as taking another horror movie role in the form of "Watchers" (1988). Alongside friend and colleague Feldman, Haim released a video documentary titled "Corey Haim: Me, Myself and I" (1989) that offered fans a glimpse into the actor's everyday life.

1991: At 20 years old, Haim took his first major adult role in "Prayer of the Rollerboys," a post-apocalyptic thriller in which he played a reluctant inline-skater-turned-undercover-agent in a violent gang. The actor received a Saturn Award nomination for his performance.

1992: Haim starred in "Blown Away," a direct-to-video movie co-starring Feldman. He also released two other direct-to-video movies, "The Double 0 Kid" and "Oh, What a Night."

1993: The actor added video-game star to his already substantial rйsumй in the form of "Double Switch," a full motion video game released for Sega CD, Sega Saturn and Mac computers. Haim provided the voice and likeness for Eddie, the game's protagonist.

1997: After a series of direct-to-video features that failed to win over audiences in the same way as his earlier successes, Haim was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and faded from the public eye for some years.

2000–2003: Following stints in rehabilitation facilities for drug-related issues, Haim attempted a comeback in the form of "Without Malice," a direct-to-video release that struggled to find an audience. In 2001, Haim was the subject of an "E! True Hollywood Story" special highlighting the actor's personal troubles throughout his career. In 2003, the actor provided a humorous cameo as himself in David Spade's "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star."

2004: Having relocated to Toronto, Haim participated in an interview with The Sun to discuss his reported troubles and absence from Hollywood, stating, "I want people to ... know [that] I'm clean, sober, humble and happy."

2007: Troubles between Haim and Feldman emerged over Haim's decision not to participate in a sequel to "The Lost Boys." In an interview with MTV News, Haim said of Feldman, "I'm just tired of him, that's all."

2008: Feldman and Haim seemingly buried the hatchet in the form of "The Two Coreys," a reality television series that chronicled the actors' relationship with one another. In a March interview with MTV News, Feldman revealed that Haim had agreed to a small cameo appearance in "Lost Boys: The Tribe."

2009–2010: Following Haim's "Lost Boys" cameo and the cancellation of his and Feldman's reality series, Haim resumed his attempt to return to acting with roles in "Shark City" and "Crank: High Voltage." According to the late actor's IMDb page, Haim had several movies in production, including "The Throwaways," "The Science of Cool" and "A Detour in Life." At press time, there was no word on the status of those projects in light of Haim's death.
