Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried Discuss Their 'Connection' In 'Dear John'

Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum have teamed up in the latest Nicholas Sparks tearjerker "Dear John." The film, which opens Friday, is about two star-crossed lovers in a whirlwind romance. John Tyree (Tatum) is shipped away to fight in the war, so he and Savannah Curtis (Seyfried) keep their love alive by writing letters.

When MTV News was on set with the pair in late 2008, it was clear they are poised to join the ranks of other classic Sparks couples, from films like "A Walk to Remember," "Nights in Rodanthe" and "The Notebook."

"My character is Savannah, and she is a Charleston [South Carolina] girl who is on her spring break, and she meets John in the surf," Seyfried said of her character.

"[I play] a soldier who is on leave for two weeks and meets the girl of his dreams, and has to leave and they have to try to keep their love alive, which does or does not happen," Tatum said, teasing that the film will keep fans guessing about whether John and Savannah can make it work.

The day MTV News was on set, the onscreen couple were shooting a scene in which they have their first official date. Tatum said the date is "the second time we've seen each other. It solidifies our connection."

While Sparks' romances tend to be epic and sweeping, Tatum wants the guys to know that if your lady is dragging you to see this flick, there's definitely enough to keep men entertained. "This, to me, when I read the book, it was a little grittier; it's not as fluffy," he said of other Sparks fare. "So I think that's what drew it to me the most. I think we stayed to the core story. It is for sure a love story, and I think a lot of people will be enchanted by it and torn by it, and I think that's what we are trying to do."
