The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Sex and the City: The Movie" ($55.7 million)
#2 "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" ($46 million)
#3 "The Strangers" ($20.7 million)
#4 "Iron Man" ($14 million)
#5 "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" ($13 million)
Break out the cosmos and make sure to raise a glass to your grandma (or mom, I suppose): She and her friends made history this weekend by bolstering "Sex and the City" to a $55.7 million opening, the highest debut in history for a film with a true female lead, and the fifth-highest opening ever for an R-rated movie. There are no doubt many people out there who care about these facts. I am not one of them.
In second place, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" fell a precipitous, but not disastrous, 54 percent in its second week, to whip up $46 million Friday through Sunday. With an overall cull of $216 million, "Crystal Skull" officially became the highest-grossing "Indy" film of all time in terms of pure receipts, although it still lags far behind each of the previous three films in terms of ticket sales and gross adjusted for inflation. (And it will never catch "Raiders," by the way, with an inflation-adjusted gross of more than $600 million.)
Liv Tyler, sure to be certified (again) as the first babe of blockbusters when "The Incredible Hulk" arrives in a few weeks' time, already has the summer's biggest surprise so far with a strong showing for "The Strangers." The horror flick earned an astounding $20.7 million to come in third place.
Rounding out the top five, "Iron Man" continued to impress, earning $14 million for a fourth-place finish, while "Prince Caspian" continued to disappoint, earning $13 million for fifth place. Their overall totals stand at $276.6 million and $115.7 million, respectively.
Among films in limited release, the very, very funny "The Foot Fist Way" scored $36,000 from four theaters.
